Katie Britt won the race for the US Senate, becoming the first woman elected to the US Senate from Alabama. Britt, the Republican candidate, defeated Democratic nominee Will Boyd and Libertarian candidate John Sophocleus, an economics professor at Auburn University.
Britt thanked supporters and said she would not back down from the historic opportunity that her election represents. She noted that she will be the only female Republican senator with school-age children, as well as the first woman elected to the Senate from Alabama.

Britt will succeed US Senator Richard Shelby, who has served Alabama in the Senate for 36 years and is stepping down after a career that saw him rise to influential positions that allowed him to direct federal funding and projects to the state. From 2016 to 2018, Britt served as Shelby’s chief of staff and had the senator’s financial backing.
Who is Katie Britt?
Katie Britt resides in Montgomery, Alabama, but was born in Enterprise, Alabama on February 2, 1982. Katie’s career started in Washington, D.C., where she worked as the deputy press secretary and then press secretary for Senator Richard Shelby. At the age of 23, she was the department head. Later, Katie worked as Robert Witt’s special assistant at the University of Alabama. After earning a law degree, she worked as an attorney for Butler Snow LLP.
She took a leave of absence in 2015 to work as Senator Shelby’s deputy campaign manager and director of communications. In 2016, she returned to his team as chief of staff. In December 2018, Katie was appointed President and CEO of the Business Council of Alabama, where she worked to strengthen the business community.

Katie Britt is married to Wesley Britt, and they have two children, Bennett and Ridgeway. She met her husband while studying political science at the University of Alabama in 2004. According to her, she learned about business and hard work from her parents, Julian and Debra Boyd, who owned a hardware store, a boat company, and dance studios. She is actively involved in a variety of civic, educational, and leadership organizations.
