The two became friends and kept in touch after the Miss Grand International (MGI) pageant in 2020 where they first met. On October 30, they announced their marriage on social media by posting a video compilation of moments from their two-year relationship. According to the caption, Varela and Valentin got married on October 28.

According to a translation provided by Hola magazine, they wrote, “After choosing to keep our relationship private, we open our doors to a special day. 28/10/22” The video begins with photos and clips from their relationship, including trips they’ve taken together, beach videos, pictures of their rings, and a video of their marriage proposal. The couple is then seen in the video, dressed in white, celebrating their marriage on the steps of the Marriage Bureau in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
