Recently, Twitter deleted a tweet by Nigerian President Muhammad Buhari for violating its rules. The tweet referred to the 1960-70 Nigerian Civil War where he threatened to punish pro-Biafra groups blamed for escalating attacks on government and security authorities.

Twitter said that Buhari’s tweet violated its “abusive behavior” policy, which leads to the 12-hour suspension of his account. The tweet followed the recent spate of attacks on offices, mainly in the southeast.  Several Twitter users reported the tweet for inciting violence in the predominantly ethically Igbo region. However, Nigeria’s information minister said Twitter’s move was unfair and labeled it as “double standards”. This is the first time a tweet from the president has been deleted.
