Iranian human rights activist Narges Mohammadi has been awarded the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of her steadfast commitment to overcoming gender inequality. She becomes the 19th woman to receive this coveted honor, which is remarkable given that she is still jailed.

In making the announcement, the Norwegian Nobel Committee stated, “The Norwegian Nobel Committee has chosen to bestow the award upon Narges Mohammadi in recognition of her resolute struggle against the subjugation of women in Iran, and her relentless efforts to advance human rights and freedom for all.”

Who is Taghi Rahmani?

Iranian journalist and human rights advocate Taghi Rahmani is well known for his unrelenting commitment to the cause of human rights in Iran. Notably, he is married to notable human rights campaigner Narges Mohammadi, who is currently behind bars.

Rahmani, an Iranian journalist who was born in 1967, started off by writing for reformist newspapers in the early 1990s. He also participated actively in the National Iranian Student Movement, a group of students who support democracy.

Due to his political involvement, Iranian authorities imprisoned Rahmani in 1999. Because of this, he received a 10-year prison sentence; however, after five years, due to worldwide pressure, he was released.

He continued to work as a journalist and a human rights activist after being freed. Additionally, he got quite involved in the effort to release his wife, Narges Mohammadi. Rahmani had to flee Iran in 2011 because he was about to be arrested there. He has lived in exile in France ever since.

His boldness is seen in his outspoken opposition to the Iranian government’s violations of human rights. His continuous efforts to secure the release of political prisoners are part of his activism. His efforts have been crucial in bringing to light the difficulties Iranian human rights activists endure.
