Maj. Omri Michaeli, aged 35 and hailing from Ness Ziona, was a dedicated soldier serving in the Duvdevan unit. Tragically, he lost his life during an exchange of gunfire with Hamas terrorists in Kfar Aza, a Gaza border community. His bravery and commitment to his duty were evident throughout his military career.

Who was Omri Michaeli?

Omri Michaeli’s name became well-known during Operation Protective Edge in 2014 when he was brought to Soroka Hospital by helicopter. His image being evacuated on a stretcher draped with an Israeli flag became an iconic symbol of that operation. He recalled at the time, “When I was lying on the gurney, the first thing I did was cover myself with Israel’s flag.”

During the 2014 operation, Michaeli was injured in the leg by a bullet in Khan Yunis. Despite his serious injury and significant blood loss, he continued to engage in the fight, focused on ensuring the safety of his wounded comrade. He explained his mindset, saying, “The body works automatically, denying pain and limitations.” With remarkable courage, he managed to evacuate his injured friend, and only after some persuasion did he agree to be evacuated for his own treatment.

For his extraordinary bravery during Operation Protective Edge, Omri Michaeli was honored with the Chief of Staff’s Medal of Honor. He shielded a fellow soldier with his body when a grenade was thrown at their troops, and he repeatedly risked his life to help evacuate casualties during the intense fighting.

In the year leading up to Operation Protective Edge, Michaeli had been living and working in Africa. However, when he learned of the impending operation, he made the decision to return to Israel and join the fight. He stated, “For me, this is about the State of Israel, first and foremost.”

Originally from Kibbutz Kfar Rupin, Michaeli had a close childhood friend, Tal Shilo, who fondly remembered him as someone invincible. Despite the dangers he faced, Michaeli always maintained a humble and captivating smile.
