A burqa-clad Baloch woman, blew herself up inside Pakistan’s prestigious University of Karachi, on Tuesday, killing three Chinese nationals and their local driver. The banned Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) linked Majeed Brigade claimed responsibility for the incident and the suicide bomber was later identified as Shari Baloch.

Who is Shari Baloch?

Shari Baloch was a 30-year-old from Niazar Abad in Balochistan’s Turbat. She had completed MSc in zoology and was pursuing M Phil while teaching in a school.

Baloch was married to a doctor and was a mother of two kids –an eight-year-old boy and a four-year-old girl. Her father was a government servant.

She reportedly joined the special self-sacrifice squad of the BLA’s Majeed Brigade in 2020.

The BLA said in a statement that she was offered the option to leave the squad because of her kids, but she refused.

“She was also working as a science teacher in a secondary school. As a student, Shaari had remained a member of Baloch students’ organisation and was aware of Baloch genocide and occupation of Balochistan,” a purported statement of the BLA said.

“She added a new chapter to the Baloch resistance history by becoming the first female fidayee of Baloch nation,” the statement said.

Following Tuesday’s attack, her husband reportedly posted a tweet, expressing pride in Baloch’s ‘selfless act.’

You will continue to remain an important part of our lives,” he tweeted, reports quoting Afghanistan journalist Bashir Ahmad Gwakh claimed.
