The Taliban and Iran exchanged heavy gunfire on Saturday near Iran’s border with Afghanistan, killing and injuring troops, amid mounting tension over water rights between the two countries.

The alleged photos and videos of clashes between the Taliban and Iran on the Afghanistan border are circulating on social media.

Reacting to the clash, Iran’s deputy police chief Gen. Qassem Rezaei accused the Taliban of making the first move on Saturday, which eventually turned into heavy casualties and serious damage.

However, Afghan Interior Ministry spokesperson Abdul Nafi Takor has moved the allegation to Iran, of them making the first shooting. The cross-border firing reportedly killed two people and wounded others.

Afghan Defence Ministry spokesperson Enayatullah Khawarazmi also said, “The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan considers dialogue to be a reasonable way for any problem”, “Making excuses for war and negative actions is not in the interest of any of the parties”, he added.

Several videos of the clash surfaced on social media. Many internet users condemned the act, lashing both countries for the dispute. One user reacting to the clash wrote, “Oh damn son, that’s all our shit! Haha they’re even wearing masks. xD 

Iran’s not going to enjoy the combination of taliban fighters with western mobility.”

Many Twitter users trolled the US administration for abandoning Afghanistan, as one user said, “Alleged video shows Taliban supposedly attacking Iran with US weapons…. Would’ve preferred US weapons stockpile be used elsewhere rather than abandoned in Afghanistan… but here we are, lol.”

“They got the US weapons at around 1986, six years from the start of Iraq-Iran war. Not gonna happen this time since there are many eyes on US weapons now. So, Iran will struggle with protests and this. Taliban did not use a lot of American weapons. Now Taliban have more things.”, another user tweeted.
