World Press Freedom day, also known as World Press day, is celebrated on May 3 every year to raise awareness regarding the importance of freedom of the press. It was first prclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly on May 3 in 1993 to highlight the freedom of the press and also pay tribute to all the journalists who have lost their lives.

As per UNESCO, this year the theme of World Press Freedom Day is ‘Information as a Public Good’.

During this month the UNESCO will organize various events to highlight the role of journalism and the part it plays in our society and will also discuss the importance of free and independent media.
