Every year on May 3, World Press Freedom Day is commemorated to raise awareness about the significance of press freedom in disseminating information and to encourage governments to respect the right to free speech. This day, established by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in December 1993, also pays honour to the journalists who have died in the line of duty.

World Press Freedom Day 2022 history:

This day was declared by the United Nations General Assembly in December 1993, after a suggestion made during the 26th session of UNESCO’s General Conference in 1991. On this day, the Windhoek Declaration was also adopted. It is a statement of press freedom principles made by African newspaper journalists in 1991.

World Press Freedom Day 2022 significance:

According to the United Nations, World Press Freedom Day is observed to honour journalists who have died in the line of duty. Furthermore, this day honours the core principles of press freedom and examines the state of press freedom across the world. World Press Freedom Day also provides a chance to defend the media against attacks on their independence.

World Press Freedom Day 2022 theme:

This year’s World Press Freedom Day topic is ‘Journalism under digital siege.’ According to the UN, the subject will focus on the various ways in which journalism is jeopardised by monitoring and digitally-mediated attacks on journalists, as well as the implications for public trust in digital communications. The UN also stated that monitoring might reveal material gathered by journalists, including whistleblowers, and can endanger the journalists’ safety.

World Press Freedom Day 2022 celebration:

UNESCO and the Republic of Uruguay will co-host this year’s World Press Freedom Day Global Conference. This year’s conference will take place from May 2 to May 5.
