Manchester City defender Benjamin Mendy has been found not guilty in six charges of rape and one charge of sexual assault by a jury at the Chester Crown Court on Friday.

The jury remained undecided on another count of rape and one of attempted rape. He will be facing another trial in order to reach a conclusion in these two cases.

Sky News reports that the 2018 World Cup winner with France was spotted holding his head when the jury’s verdicts were being read out in court.

The 28-year-old footballer remains suspended by his club since 2021 August. Pep Guardiola, the club’s coach, had to testify about Mendy’s character in court.

Louis Saha Matturie, who is Mendy’s co-accused, has been cleared of three counts of rape.

In the trial, Mendy revealed to the court that he often slept with a number of women on the same night. He added that it was “honestly, so easy” for a famous footballer like him to invite women to his house in Prestbury’s Cheshire village.

According to the charges, from 2018 to 2021, Mendy sexually assaulted women at his home. A woman, who was 17 at the time, alleged that both Mendy and Saha had raped her on the same night. However, the duo were cleared of the charges of rape in her case.

During the course of the trial, a video had emerged of a woman and Matturie having “enthusiastic and obviously consensual sex”, which made the judge ask the jury to find him not guilty of charges of rape related to her.

In her closing statements, Eleanor Laws KC said, “Someone who has made serious criminal allegations against two men. And you have watched it play out, unusually, in front of your eyes. Because when ever does a defendant have a film to prove their innocence? Hardly ever.”

Manchester City has also released a statement regarding Mendy being found not guilty in the aforementioned cases. The club said, “Manchester City FC notes the verdict from Chester crown court today where a jury has found Benjamin Mendy not guilty of seven charges.”

The club further added, “The jury is hung on two charges and the trial is now over. “Given there are open matters related to this case, the club is not in a position to comment further at this time.”
