It’s Random Acts of Kindness Day today, a yearly event that promotes little acts of kindness and compassion for one another and for ourselves. A nonprofit group named the Random Acts of Kindness Foundation created the day in the 1990s. It is a community organization based in Denver, Colorado, and is led by Will Glennon, the team’s founder.
This special event on February 17 is focused on helping others. The foundation claims that its objective is to make kindness the norm in a world where people are frequently exposed to negativity on social media or in the news.

History of the Random Acts of Kindness Day:
According to the Random Acts of Kindness Foundation, the Random Acts of Kindness movement is believed to have started more than 40 years ago in the San Francisco Bay Area.
The phrase “practice random kindness and senseless acts of beauty,” is credited to journalist and author Anne Herbert. A kindness movement was launched by the story and quickly spread across the community.
Herbert’s quote was painted on a warehouse wall in San Francisco in 1991, and a woman who saw it informed her husband and a seventh-grade teacher about it. The teacher discussed it with his students, one of whom was the child of a reporter for the San Francisco Chronicle who later wrote about Herbert and her catchphrase.
After the article appeared in Reader’s Digest, Conari Press editors in Berkeley, California, reproduced it and later used it as the basis for their book “Random Acts of Kindness,” which was released in February 1993.
That year, local Random Acts of Kindness Day was established by motivated readers. According to the foundation, the first National Random Acts of Kindness Day was held in February 1995.
