Who is Deepak Chahar?
Deepak Chahar first came into the limelight when he
put his best foot forward and carried the Men in Blue to win the game and the
series against Sri Lanka. Chahar scalped two wickets in his eight overs and
then amassed 69 runs from 82 balls while chasing a modest total of 276 last
year.

Born in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, Chahar was raised
alongside elder sibling Malti Chahar, who is a Hindi film actor, and cousin
Rahul Chahar, a fellow cricketer.
In the 2010-11 Ranji Trophy season, he made his first-class
debut for Rajasthan against Hyderbad and picked up figures of 8/10 with his
impressive swing bowling. Having the capability to generate swing with great
accuracy in Indian conditions, which very few can, earned him a youth contract
with the IPL franchise Rajasthan Royals.

But Chahar had to keep working on his accuracy and
control for the following years to break into the top of the cricketing chain.
Finally, in January
2018, he was bought by the Chennai Super Kings in the 2018 IPL auction. By then
Chahar had rediscovered his fitness after bouts with long spells of injury.
Although he started out as a classical swing bowler, Chahar had also mastered a
bag full of trickery to make him available even for the shortest format.

He soon became a reliable option for MS Dhoni, with
the new ball, often bowling three overs in the Powerplay itself. But Chahar
wasn’t going to stop at it, he kept working on himself and turned into a
capable death bowler.
Meanwhile, the 28-year-old made his T20I debut for
India on July 8, 2018, in England.
And in November 2019, Chahar registered his
world-record effort against Bangladesh in the final T20I of the series, when he
took four of his six wickets, including a hattrick with a wet old ball in
extremely dewy conditions. He ended the night with six wickets for seven runs
from 3.2 overs.
He also took the first hat-trick by a bowler for India
and his first five-wicket haul in T20Is. He won the Player of the Match award
for the final match and also the Player of the series award. Last season, he
took 14 wickets in 15 matches.
In the IPL 2022, Deepak Chahar has ruled out of the tournament due to a back injury. He is likely to miss the T20 World Cup in Australia as well.
