Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday will chair a key meeting with Education Minister Ramesh Pohkriyal and and state Education Secretaries about the fate of CBSE class 12 students. Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar and Women and Child Development Minister Smriti Irani are expected to attend the meeting.

Exams for CBSE class 12 were postponed after the deadly second wave hit India. The education board cancelled class 10 exams and decided to mark the students on the basis of internal assessment. This is second year in a row that CBSE has decided to cancel class 10 exams.

According to The Indian Express, the CBSE has proposed that it will conduct the class 12 Board examination only for major subjects.

The Board considered 20 subjects as major, including Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology, History, Political Science, Business Studies, Accountancy, Geography, Economics, and English. A CBSE student takes a minimum of five and a maximum of six subjects. Of these, usually four are major subjects.

According to the report, there are two options for conducting the Board examinations for the major subjects.

If the board considers first option, students will have to examinations for the major subjects in the “existing format” in designated centres and marks for minor subjects can be calculated based on the performance in the major subjects.

Under the second format, class 12 students can take the major subject exams in their own schools, instead of designated centres. The Board has also recommended to decrease the three-hour duration to one-and-a half hours.

India is currently reporting over 2 lakh cases of coronavirus everyday and educational instructions across the country have been closed to stop the spread of the deadly virus. Many competitive exams have also been postponed or cancelled.
