Kiran Bedi is a former tennis player and politician from India. She was the first woman in India to join the officer ranks of the Indian Police Service (IPS) in 1972 and served as the 24th Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry from 28 May 2016 to 16 February 2021. She served for 35 years before retiring in 2007 as Director-General of the Bureau of Police Research and Development.
Bedi won the national junior tennis championship as a youngster in 1966. She won multiple national and state-level competitions between 1965 and 1978. Bedi served in Delhi, Goa, Chandigarh, and Mizoram after joining the IPS. She began her career as an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) in Delhi’s Chanakyapuri neighbourhood, and she was awarded the President’s Police Medal in 1979. She then relocated to West Delhi, where she helped to reduce crimes against women. As a traffic officer, she later managed traffic arrangements for the 1982 Asian Games in Delhi and the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Goa in 1983.
Bedi was appointed Inspector General of Delhi Prisons in May 1993. She implemented significant improvements at Tihar Jail, which received international praise and earned her the Ramon Magsaysay Award in 1994. Bedi was selected as the first Indian and first woman to head the United Nations Police and Police Advisor in the United Nations Department of Peace Operations in 2003. She quit in 2007 to devote her time to social activity and writing.
She founded the India Vision Foundation and is the author of several books. From 2008 to 2011, she hosted the court show Aap Ki Kachehri. She played an important role in India’s anti-corruption movement in 2011, and she joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in January 2015. In the 2015 Delhi Assembly election, she ran unsuccessfully as the party’s Chief Ministerial candidate.
