American pop singer Britney Spears, fighting against her conservator, her father who manages her personal and business matters, on Wednesday appeared in the Los Angeles court for the first time in two years and said, “I just want my life back. It’s been 13 years and it’s enough.”

The 39-year-old singer has called an end to the ‘abusive’ management of her money, career, and life affairs by her legal guardians. In an arrangement called conservatorship, Britney Spears’ career, financial and personal affairs have been in the hands of her father, Jamie Spears, since 2008 through court’s order after she faced a public mental health crisis.

Conservatorship is the appointment of a legal guardian or protector by a judge for individuals, who are unable to make their own decisions or those suffering from mental or other illnesses.

The singer is seeking to dismiss her father from the role as she told the court that her conservatorship is “doing way more harm than good.”

The interest in Britney Spears’ legal row increased in 2021 after the release of a documentary, raming Britney Spears, which is centered on the same issue.

Britney Spears’ conservatorship arrangement is divided into two parts: finances and estate. The 39-year-old has not managed her finances since 2008.

Till 2019, Jamie Spears controlled both parts of the singer’s conservatorship. He stepped down as Britney Spears’ personal conservatorship in 2019 due to health reasons and was replaced by a care professional, Jodi Montgomery.

Britney Spears is seeking to remove her father as her financial guardian but a judge declined the same last year in November. Meanwhile, the judge named the Bessemer Trust as a co-conservator of her estate instead. A month later, the judge extended Jamie Spears conservatorship until September this year.

The singer’s conservatorship was set up in 2008 after Britney Spears started behaving erratically after her divorce from Kevin Federline and lost custody of her two children.

Further concerns were raised about her mental health after the singer made headlines for shaving her head and hitting a photographer’s car with an umbrella. Britney Spears was admitted to the hospital two times in 2008 under a temporary psychiatric assessment ruling. One of the incidents that were the reason behind her admission to hospital was when she had allegedly refused to surrender her sons in a stand-off involving police.
