Eleven people were killed after a part of the Nanda Devi glacier broke off at Joshimath in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district on Sunday. It triggered a deluge in the Alaknanda river system and damaged two power projects – NTPC’s Tapovan-Vishnugad hydel project and the Rishi Ganga Hydel Project.
Personnel from the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) were called for the search and rescue operation.
On Sunday, 12 people were rescued from a tunnel in the Tapovan project. Operations were underway on Monday to rescue the 35 people stranded at another tunnel.
Uttarakhand’s Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat on Monday said 203 people were missing, including 11 bodies that were recovered on Sunday.
