The
Australian Open men’s singles final between Daniil Medvedev and Rafael Nadal
was temporarily disturbed at Rod Laver Arena on Sunday after a protester
invaded the court.

During
a tensed second set, Nadal, who is aiming for his 21st Grand Slam title, and
Medvedev were quickly cordoned off by the security staff after a protester
appeared to jump from his seat in the stands and land in front of the
commentary box, just metres from the playing surface.

The
person was holding a banner that read “Abolish refugee detention” and was
quickly apprehended and thrown out of the court by security personnel and the
police. The match, which was interrupted for around a minute, continued with Nadal then falling two sets down
as his hopes of surpassing rivals Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer with a
record 21st Grand Slam singles title diminished further.

Back
in 2015, the men’s final between Andy Murray and Djokovic was also disrupted by
a protester yielding a banner that demanded the closure of the Manus Island
immigration detention centre.
On
Saturday, Ashleigh Barty became the first Australian singles player in 44 years
to win the women’s singles title at home Grand Slam after overturning a 5-1 second-set deficit to
win 6-3 7-6 against American Danielle Collins in the women’s showpiece.

Earlier
on Sunday, top seeds Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova defeated
unseeded Anna Danilina and Beatriz Haddad Maia 6-7(3), 6-4, 6-4 to win the
Australian Open women’s doubles final at Melbourne Park on Sunday. This was their
fourth title together.

Meanwhile,
while Nadal is on the verge of creating a history, Medvedev, who won the US
Open Grand Slam last year, is aiming for his second title. Medvedev also stands
a chance to become the first man in the Open Era to earn consecutive Grand Slam
titles.
