Joe Root, England’s most successful Test
captain, stepped down from his position on Friday with immediate effect. Root
has captained the English Test side for five years and has led the team in 64
matches, winning 27 and losing 26, the highest number for anyone in English
cricket. Root was clear that he wanted to continue captaining the side even
after a humiliating defeat against the Windies recently. However, as public opinion
changed, Root decided it was time for him to call it quits.

Root’s decision, though unsurprising, has
attracted a lot of public opinion. “He gave it everything with very little
support for the Red ball team under his watch…then he had to deal with Covid
times…he still is and will (be) the game’s best role model for many years many
years…now enjoy being the senior player for many more seasons,” tweeted Michael
Vaughan, former English team captain.
The Yorkshire club, which Joe Root played for,
tweeted: “An England and Yorkshire legend. You should be very proud,”
addressing Root.

“There’s no doubt about it @root66 is a
top-quality player and human being and role model for up-and-coming English
cricketers but I feel England do need a new captain despite limited choices. Joe
lacked a feel for the game and was not willing to take a risk to win the game,”
Mark Waugh, former Australian cricketer, said.
Joe Root, while signing off as England captain,
said: “After returning from the Caribbean tour and having time to reflect, I
have decided to step down as England’s men Test captain.”

“It has been the most challenging decision I
have had to make in my career but having discussed this with my family and
those closest to me, I know the timing is right.”
“I had loved leading my country but recently it’s
hit home how much of a toll it has taken on me and the impact it has had on me
away from the game,” Rood said.
