The Mumbai Indians faced their fifth defeat on IPL 2022 against the Punjab Kings at the MCA Stadium, Pune on Wednesday. The five-time champions are without points this season and lie at the bottom of the points table.
PBKS defeated Rohit Sharma and co by 12 runs.

Chasing 199 runs, Rohit Sharma gave Mumbai Indians a flying start. He (28 off 17) and fellow opener Ishan Kishan (3 off 6) scored 31 runs in 3.4 overs before Kagiso Rabada drew first blood. MI were soon 32/2 with two youngsters – Dewald Brevis and Tilak Varma – in the middle.

Varma and Brevis then put up an 84-run partnership, threatening to take away the game from PBKS. The former made 36 off 20 balls with the help of three boundaries and two sixes while the latter smashed four boundaries and five maximums in his 25-ball 49. Baby AB was mistimed Odea Smith and was caught out. Varma fell to a run out.
Suryakumar Yadav scored 43 runs off 30 balls as Kieron Pollard’s (10, 11 balls) season just got from bad to worse.

Odean Smith (4/30 in 4 overs) redeemed himself after the horror last two balls against Gujarat Titans as he got two wickets in the final over for Punjab.
In the first innings, skipper Mayank Agarwal and veteran Shikhar Dhawan struck their first half-centuries to take Punjab close to 200 runs on a green Pune pitch.
Jasprit Bumrah was the pick of the MI bowlers. The pacer recorded figures of 28/1 in his four overs.
