The newcomer will step into the shoes of one of Marvel’s iconic heroes, portraying Ms Marvel. When the character was first introduced in comics, Ms Marvel made waves as the first Muslim superhero.
Kamala Khan or Ms Marvel, started off as a young Pakistani American from New Jersey, who looked up to Carol Danvers or Captain Marvel – who we have already seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Over time, Khan starts developing powers of her own and gradually steps into the role of a superhero. The upcoming Disney+ series will have six episodes and is slated for a June 8 release.
The trailer shows a high-school girl dealing with life’s problems, scored to the Weeknd’s ‘Blinding Lights’. Eventually, she starts realizing how she’s destined for greatness. With powers of cosmic proportion, Ms Marvel has to save the world.
As Marvel continues championing inclusivity, the movies have faced censorship in some parts of the world. The upcoming ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness‘ has been banned in Saudi Arabia for including America Chavez, a gay superhero. Notably, homosexuality is illegal in Saudi Arabia.
This push from the superhero franchise was also signalled when MCU was moving into a new phase. Studio president Kevin Feige first hinted at greater representation and was supported by Marvel’s production chief, Victoria Alonso. This was ahead of the ‘Eternals’ movie coming out, which showed a gay superhero in the MCU for the first time.
