Barcelona finished third in this year’s UEFA Champions League Group E – behind Bayern Munich and Benfica – and failed to reach the knockout rounds of the competition for the first time in 21 years.

The last time the Catalan club failed to reach the Champions League round of 16 was in the 2000/2001 season, when Pep Guardiola was the captain.

Barca will now play in the Europa League for the first time in 17 years – the last time they played in Europe’s second-tier competition was in the 2003/04, when it was called the UEFA Cup. 

The Blaugrana have been drawn against Napoli in the Europa League this season, with the first leg scheduled to be played at the Camp Nou on February 17, with the return leg scheduled for February 25.
