Chris Hemsworth’s Thor appears to understand that he no longer wants the title at the conclusion of Avengers: Endgame. He feels other individuals are more qualified to defend Asgard from those who seek to destroy it and don’t think he’s cut out to be a hero. Now that he’s made that choice, someone else must assume the role of Thor, which is where Jane Foster, played by Natalie Portman, enters the picture. So how did Jane end up replacing Thor?
After Nick Fury whispers something into Odinson’s (Thor’s) ear that disqualifies him from the title, Jane Foster assumes the role of Thor in the comics. Then, despite her own battle with breast cancer, Jane rises forward to defend Asgard. In a cruel irony, she effectively renders her treatment useless each time she transforms into Thor. She still decides to take on the role of a hero.

After taking on the identity of Thor, Jane fights as Malekith and Roxxon to protect the 10 realms. She ultimately perishes in a battle with the Mangog (these names are a lot, we know). She ultimately receives a resurrection from Odin in appreciation for her work after saving Asgard. She still has breast cancer though, despite being raised from the dead. She now exists as a Valkyrie in the comic books.
