Dr Arti Singh is the country’s only female commissioner. She is now in charge of the city of Amravati after being promoted to the rank of DIG.
She is currently investigating the murder of Umesh Prahladrao Kolhe, a 54-year-old chemist, in Maharashtra’s Amravati district. The murder took place on June 21, 2022.
He was allegedly murdered in retaliation for a social media post in support of BJP candidate Nupur Sharma, who made controversial remarks about the Prophet during a TV debate.

“Five persons have been arrested in the case and we are looking for the remaining whose arrest will give us clarity on the motive behind the murder,” she stated regarding the Umesh Kolhe murder case.
Singh grew up in the rural community of Mirzapur, Uttar Pradesh. She passed the Civil Service Examination (CSE) administered by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) in 2006 and was accepted into the Indian Police Service (IPS).

Talking about her position as the police commisioner, she told TOI- “The unique opportunity and honour knocked on my door due to to the progressive policies of the home department of Maharashtra government, the DG office and others, the opportunity to serve as CP.”
“It also signifies a change in the mindset against placing a woman at the helm of an independent unit. Many still do not believe that a woman at the top can handle the responsibility. In Amravati city, I am handling a force of around 2,500 constabulary and officers,” she added.

Singh recently received a letter of appreciation from DGP Subodh Jaiswal for her outstanding work as Nasik rural SP during the pandemic at hotspot Malegaon.
She has also accomplished the feat of serving as SP in four districts. Aside from Nasik rural, Singh has worked as a police officer in Nagpur, Aurangabad, and Bhandara.
Singh has two kids, aged 4 and 10. The mother of two has been subjected to acid tests while serving in critical positions throughout her career, including her first posting in the highly sensitive Naxal hotbed of Bhamragarh in south Gadchiroli.
She stated- “In south Gadchiroli, I conducted elections (state and general) in 2009 in the backdrop of the Laheri encounter (where 17 cops were killed). Also, I recovered a substantial cache of arms and ammunitions as SDPO.”
