Hollywood actor Will Smith on Friday addressed the Chris Rock slapgate incident for the first time on camera since the incident. The 53-year-old actor also apologised to musician Questlove for “tarnishing his moment” at the Oscars 2022.
In the video, which was to YouTube, Instagram and Facebook, the actor said his behavior was “unacceptable” and that he had reached out to Rock to discuss the incident but was told the comedian wasn’t ready.
“I’ve reached out to Chris and the message that came back is that he’s not ready to talk, and when he is he will reach out. So I will say to you, Chris, I apologize to you. My behavior was unacceptable, and I’m here whenever you’re ready to talk,” he said.

For those unversed, Chris Rock got on the stage to present the award for best documentary feature, which was eventually won by Questlove for Summer of Soul, when the comedian’s joke about Smith’s wife Jada Pinkett Smith did not go down well with Will Smith, who responded by approaching the stage and slapping Rock the comedian.
“It really breaks my heart to have stolen and tarnished your moment. I can still see Questlove’s eyes. It happened on Questlove’s award. And it’s like, “I’m sorry” really isn’t sufficient,” Will Smith said in the video on Friday.

Questlove appeared on The Tonight Show a day after the event and said that he was completely unaware of what had happened before his big moment.
“Of course, [winning the award] happened in the cyclone of a whole other situation with two very good friends of mine,” Questlove said of Rock and Will. “I really wasn’t aware of that.”
