Idris Elba is a British actor who has worked in a number of major film and television productions throughout his career. A son of immigrants from Sierra Leone, his full name is Idrissa Akuna Elba. The actor quit school when he won a place at the National Youth Music Theatre and worked odd jobs in between acting gigs to support himself.

Elba’s most iconic role till date is also the one that made him a star. In the 2002 HBO series The Wire, Elba portrayed a gangster called Stringer Bell, who works as a consigliere for a notorious drug dealer called Avon Barksdale. While the character of Avon is aggressive and loud, Stringer Bell is the quiet one. Although he does not hesitate to kill anyone who stands in his way, Bell makes sure that he is not present when such a crime is committed. Bell can be considered the chief adversary of the series’ protagonist, homicide detective Jimmy McNulty.

Among Bell’s film roles, Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, is the most notable. He portrayed the legendary South African president in this production by Justin Chadwick. Bell has been a part of both the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). In the MCU movies, he portrays the character of Heimdall, a blind seer who can envision all time and space. In the DCEU movies, Bell portrays the character of Bloodsport. 

Besides acting, Bell has also dabbled in music and kickboxing. He also performs as a DJ at times using the name DJ Big Driis. The British Empire honoured his services to the dramatic arts by inducting him as an officer in the OBE (Order of the British Empire).
