Chicago police on Thursday asked SWAT to be deployed as hundreds of people got rowdy in the streets while celebrating the Mexican Independence Day, breaking news handle Raw Alerts posted on Twitter.

The Mexican Independence Day is celebrated on September 16. People in Chicago, at the intersection of Michigan and Lake, could be seen dancing on top of their cars. They lit off fireworks and cars were doing burnouts.

The Chicago Police Department (CPD) had said that they are preparing for car caravans ahead of Mexican Independence Day celebrations. Parades in Little Village started over the weekend. The theme was “our unity is our strength.”

Police said that they are working to make sure celebrations are safe. The car caravan are a longtime tradition in Chicago.
“Not only that they can celebrate, that traffic is mobile, that retail corridors have the opportunity to have those customers, and do it in a safe manner,” said Angel Novalez, the department’s chief of constitutional policing and reform.

The chief added that officers have also worked with community members to create individual plans that would work for their neighborhoods.
The holiday, which falls on Friday, celebrates Mexico’s declaration of independence from Spain in 1810.

Chicago’s Office of Emergency Management and Communication urged residents to use caution through the weekend.
“The City of Chicago encourages residents to celebrate safely and responsibly. Expect increased traffic due to celebratory activities through Sept. 18,” OEMC said.
