Darjeeling is one of the most famous tourist destinations in West Bengal. It was first identified to be a summer retreat for officers of the British East India Company in the 19th century. The place was originally a part of Sikkim, but was leased by the EIC and latter annexed into British India.
While in the 19th and 20th century, Darjeeling was considered a luxury tourist destination, it has become more accessible to common people since India liberalised its economy in 1991.
The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, which is unofficially known as the toy train, is a major tourist attraction of this hill station. The railway has now been granted UNESCO’s World Heritage Status. The railway was first constructed to carry tourists and Darjeeling’s main export, tea.
The Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park in Darjeeling hosts a number of rare animals like the Tibetan wolf and the elusive snow leopard.
On clear days, the Kanchenjunga mountain, which is the third highest mountain peak in the world, is visible on the northern side of Darjeeling.
The town also a number of notable educational institutions that were established by the British government. Some of them include the St. Paul’s School, Loreto Convent, St. Joseph’s School, and the Southfield College.
