Amazon Quiz (September 28): This bird is the domesticated subspecies of which bird?

Red Junglefowl

Grey Junglefowl

Green Junglefowl

Sri Lankan Junglefowl

Answer: Red Junglefowl

The Phasianidae family of tropical birds includes the red junglefowl (Gallus gallus). It covers a large portion of South Asia as well as Southeast Asia. Before, it was called the Bankiva or Bankiva Fowl.

The grey junglefowl, Sri Lankan junglefowl, and green junglefowl have all contributed genetic material to the gene pool of the chicken, which is the species that gave rise to the chicken (Gallus gallus domesticus).

The chicken has adapted from red junglefowl about 8,000 years ago, with this domestication process including numerous maternal sources, according to molecular evidence obtained from whole-genome sequencing. Since then, people have kept them in captivity in various parts of the world for their meat, eggs, and company.

Junglefowl has colourful decorative feathers and males are noticeably larger than females. Long, arched feathers that are black at first glance but shimmer with blue, purple, and green in direct sunlight make up the male’s tail. On his neck and back, he also possesses long, golden hackle feathers.

The female’s feathers are cryptic and camouflage-adapted, which is typical of this family of birds. The eggs and chicks are only taken care of by her. In comparison to the males, she also has a much smaller comb and wattles, which are fleshy decorations on the head that indicate good health to rivals and possible mates.
