With roles in Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk, the upcoming Don’t Worry Darling, and My Policeman, Harry Styles already has an impressive acting portfolio for a rookie. However, the pop artist admitted on Monday at the Venice International Film Festival that he frequently feels as if he “has no idea what I’m doing” when acting.

One of the most eagerly awaited events of a festival packed with celebrities was the appearance of Styles on the Lido, where Don’t Worry Darling will have its international debut Monday night. Styles was asked numerous questions regarding his fans, his career, and whether or not he would collaborate with filmmaker Olivia Wilde again during a press conference prior to the film’s screening, but he chose not to respond to any of them.

Styles portrays Jack in an experimental town in Don’t Worry Darling, which is governed by Chris Pine’s charismatic cult leader and home to the secret Victory Project. Alice, who is portrayed by Florence Pugh as Jack’s wife, is provided with every comfort possible in exchange for her silence. She quickly begins to notice gaps in the veneer, though.

“I think it’s fun to get to play in worlds that aren’t necessarily your own. This world that is supposedly so perfect, it’s really fun to play pretend in there,” Styles said. “There wasn’t too much acting.”

Styles missed three days of his performances at Madison Square Garden in order to join Wilde, co-stars Pine and Gemma Chan, and others at the Don’t Worry Darling premiere in Venice. He admitted that despite juggling two prominent artistic pursuits, he doesn’t perceive many similarities between acting and music.

“Personally I find them to be kind of opposite in a lot of ways. I think making music is a really personal thing,” Styles added. “There’s aspects of acting where you’re drawing from experiences you’ve had but for the most part you’re pretending to play someone else. I think that’s what I find the most fun about it: playing pretend.”

He remarked, “I think the fun part is you never know what you’re doing. Music I’ve done for longer, but what I like about acting is I feel like I have no idea what I’m doing.”

In order to get a perfect spot in front of the red carpet for the premiere, hours beforehand, fans were already congregating in front of the theatre early on Monday. There were several firsthand accounts of how Styles’ music changed people’s lives.

About what it’s like to matter so much to so many people, he said, “I’m incredibly grateful to the people who’ve supported me in my life and the fans in particular have always provided me with a place to be myself and feel comfortable doing so and express myself. I would like to hope I can give that space back to them.”
