Hurun India and EdelGive on October 20 released the 9th
EdelGive Hurun India Philanthropy List 2022. The list features individuals who
have donated Rs 5 crore or more during the period under review.

HCL founder Shiv Nadar topped as the most generous person
in the country with an annual donation of Rs 1,161 crore. According to the
report, Nadar, 77, has reclaimed the “India’s most generous’ title with a
donation of Rs 3 crore per day.

Wipro’s Azim Premji, 77, was at the second spot with a
donation of Rs 484 crore after staying at the top position for the last two
years, the report said.

They were followed by Mukesh Ambani & family with a
donation of Rs 411 crore and Kumar Mangalam Birla & family with a donation
of Rs 242 crore.

Susmita, Subroto Bagchi, Radha, and NS Parthasarathy of
Mindtree were at the fifth spot with a combined annual donation of Rs 425
crore.

Gautam Adani, Asia’s richest man, ranked seventh in the
Edelgive Hurun India Philanthropy list 2020, with a donation of Rs 190 crore.

The first professional manager to make it into the top 10
on the EdelGive Hurun Philanthropy List is AM Naik, the 80-year-old group
chairman of Larsen & Toubro, who donated Rs 142 crore. The other
professional managers on the list are the philanthropy couple Amit Chandra, 53,
and Archana, 51, who donated Rs 24 crore.

Zerodha’s Nikhil Kamath, 36, was the youngest on the
EdelGive Hurun Philanthropy List 2022. He and his brother Nithin Kamath
increased their donation by 300% to Rs 100 crore this year for various philanthropic
causes.

With a donation of Rs 120 crore, Rohini Nilekani tops the
list of the most generous women, followed by Gandhi Tewari and Anu Aga who
donated Rs 21 crore and Rs 20 crore, respectively.

Another prominent name on the list was Ajit Isaac, Chairman
of Quess Corp, the new entrant on the list at the 12th rank with a donation of
Rs 105 crore to the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru.

Rakesh Gangwal, Co-promoter of InterGlobe Aviation, is
ranked fourth for giving a personal donation of Rs 100 crore to the School of
Medical Sciences & Technology at IIT, Kanpur.

In India a total of 15 individuals made an annual donation
of Rs 100 crore, 20 donated over Rs 50 crore, and 43 donated over Rs 20 crore,
according to the report.

Going by cities, Mumbai tops the list with 33% of
philanthropists, followed by New Delhi with 16%. Bengaluru was in the third
spot with 16%.

The Pharmaceutical Industry has the largest number of
philanthropists in the list, accounting for 20%, followed by the chemicals and
petrochemicals sector with 11% of philanthropists.

The average age of philanthropists on the list is 69 years,
2 years older than last year. With 75 philanthropists collectively donating Rs
1,233 crore, education is the most favored sector.

The report is based on a survey of India’s most successful
entrepreneurs, including those from the Hurun India Rich List 2022, meticulously
cross-referencing the results with media reports and charitable
foundations. The annual ranking of the
most generous individuals in India was an attempt to highlight India’s
remarkable philanthropists and to capture the growing importance of individual
givers in India’s philanthropic landscape towards nation-building.
