Anglers use a fish hook or “angle” (from the Old English angol) linked to a fishing line to tie individual fish in the mouth. A fishing rod is typically used to manage the fishing line, however rodless methods such as handlining and longlining are also available. Tenkara and cane pole fishing are two rod-angling styles that do not require reels.
The hook is normally dressed with an appetising bait to attract the fish and entice it into eating the hook, however, an inedible artificial bait with numerous attached hooks (known as a lure) is sometimes used than a single hook with edible bait. A bite indication, like a float or a quiver tip, is frequently employed to communicate the underwater condition of the hook to the surface.
Although angling is the most popular recreational fishing technique, commercial fisheries also employ angling techniques such as longlining and trolling. Sport fishers are increasingly practising catch-and-release angling.
Snagging, another fishing system that enables line and hooks to catch fish is not to be confused with angling. The two methods vary in that angling frequently employs very small hooks and relies on the target fish actively swallowing the hook in order to pierce internally into the mouth, whereas snagging employs very large, sharp multi-hooks that willfully pierce from outside into the body/gill of the fish and almost never employs hook bait. Snagging also causes significantly more decapitating injuries to the fish and makes healing and survival extremely difficult, even if the fish is released alive or learns to escape the snag.
