The world's most populous national capital, Beijing is home to 21 million people and has an administrative area of 16,410.5 square kilometres.
The centre of political power in China, Beijing also houses the largest number of Fortune Global 500 companies in the world, and is the headquarters of China's biggest state-owned enterprises.
However, Beijing was not always the capital of China: the country has had four capitals - Beijing, Nanjing, Luoyang and Xi'an - over the few millennia it has existed, with Beijing being the last of the aforementioned Great Ancient Capitals of China.
That being said, Beijing has been the seat of power in China for the last eight centuries, a fact evident in the opulent palaces, gardens, temples, parks, tombs, walls and gates strewn across the city.
Beijing, being a collection of China's historical and cultural past, is also a tourism hotspot, and in 2018, was the world's second-highest earning city vis-a-vis tourism income after Shanghai.
Beijing is also home to 91 universities that consistently rank among the best universities in the Asia-Pacific region and in the world.
The city was first established in more than 3,000 years ago, in 1,045 BC.
