Amazon Quiz (June 20, 2022): Which country is the largest producer of this beverage?

India

Colombia

Peru

Brazil

Answer: Brazil

Brazil is the world’s largest coffee producer, and has such a huge stake in coffee production that a shortfall in Brazil could lead to global spikes in coffee prices.

As of 2022, Brazil was projected to produce 38.78 million bags of arabica coffee, a 23% increase over 2021. Meanwhile, the country’s robusta coffee output is projected to stand at 16.9 million bags, a 4% increase over last year.

That being said, Brazil’s coffee production this year will still fall short of the record set it 2020, when the country produced 63 million bags.

This deficit, understandably, is expected to lead to a rise in global coffee prices.

According to HedgePoint coffee analyst Natalia Gandolphi, the expected global deficit “would be a first in recent years for the coffee market, given that consecutive years of deficit/flat balance have not been seen since 2008-10.”

“Besides the current difficulty in sourcing, availability is likely to be a repeated issue next year, translating into a tighter market through 2022 and possibly 2023,” Gandolphi further told Reuters.

For those unaware, coffee is among the most consumed beverages in the world: with over 70 countries producing coffee globally, the beverage is consumed all year round using different recipes.

Finland, as per available information, consumes the most coffee on a per capita consumption basis, with an average adult Finn consuming 27 pounds of coffee a year, versus an average American’s 11 point average annual consumption.
