Africa

South East Asia

Answer: South East Asia

The banana plant, which is the largest herbaceous flowering plant in the world, is believed to have originated in the Malay archipelago in South East Asia thousands of years ago. While the species of the banana plant are native to the Indomalaya or South Asia region and Australia, it is believed to have been first domesticated in modern day Papua New Guinea.

Today, however, bananas are grown in tropical countries around the world, from South Asia, to South and Central America, to Africa.

Indeed, bananas constitute an important food crop in developing countries in the aforementioned regions, where unripe bananas are widely used for cooking and ripe bananas are consumed as fruits.

In terms of nutrition value, raw bananas without skin contain 75% water, 23% carbohydrates, and 1% protein, along with some negligible fat content. A 100 gram banana contains 89 calories on average.

In 2017, the global combined production of bananas stood at 153 million tonnes, led by India and China: while India produced 30.5 million tonnes, China was a distant second, with their banana production standing at 11.2 million in the aforementioned year. Philippines, Colombia, and Indonesia made up the rest of the top five producers, producing 9.2 million tonnes, 7.4 million tonnes, and 7.2 million tonnes respectively.
