The intense struggle for the 2021 world title between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen will be relived once again through Netflix‘s ‘Drive To Survive’ documentary series, which starts its fourth season on March 11. The series, which has been credited with increasing F1 popularity, particularly in North America, will be looking closely at the 2021 season, which went down to the wire until the final lap of the season, where Verstappen beat out Hamilton. Notably, the documentary will not include much of the world champion himself since he declined to participate because he feared it would create an artificial rivalry.

The documentary will follow the longest F1 season in history, as the sport ended up with 22 races on the calendar despite the hurdles posed by the epidemic. It will also highlight the fierce competition between the Ferrari and McLaren teams, who contended for P3 and P4 in the constructors’ championship.

There were several remarkable performances, including Esteban Ocon’s debut win in the Hungarian GP, which he shared with teammate Fernando Alonso, and the dramatic Azerbaijan GP, which saw a red flag at the tail end of the race when Verstappen withdrew due to a tyre blow out. Sergio Perez won the race decisively, and Sebastian Vettel earned Aston Martin’s first podium result as a constructor.

Of course, the documentary will include footage from the season’s last lap, when Hamilton was passed by Verstappen owing to the odd calls by FIA race director Michael Masi, which resulted in the safety car entering the pits sooner than usual. The 2021 season also marked the conclusion of Kimi Raikkonen‘s illustrious F1 career, which spanned over 20 years and saw him become the sport’s most experienced driver.

The documentary begins just in time for the start of the 2022 season, which begins on March 20 with the opening race in Bahrain. Half of the teams have already shown off their new liveries and 2022 vehicles, and by next week, all of the teams will be in Barcelona for pre-season shakedowns before pre-season testing begins in Bahrain ahead of the first race.
