The burning question after Squid Game became the surprise Netflix phenomenon that ripped through streaming audiences in 2021 is, will there be a second season?

Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk told Deadline on the red carpet at Saturday’s PGA awards ceremony that there is nothing to see just yet, but he is hard at work on ideas for the next season of the South Korean killer survival drama.

“All I can say is that there will be more great games,” Hwang said. “I’m just brainstorming and gathering ideas for Season 2, I haven’t even started writing yet.”

The hugely popular Korean survival drama has been renewed for a second season on Netflix, but production may take a little longer than anticipated.

Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk told Variety at this year’s Critics Choice Awards that a season two script does not even exist yet.

Will there be reminiscences? Are the characters from Season 1 gone for good? Can we expect to see some of the cast members return in some capacity?

“No, because most of them are dead,” Hwang joked. “I’ll try something to entice them to return for Season 2.” “Let’s say she has a twin sister, you’ll see,” he said on the red carpet to HoYeon Jung, who plays Kang Sae-byeok on Season 1 of Squid Game.

“I could change the colour of my hair,” Jung joked. “Let’s try something a little like plastic surgery.” When asked if he was surprised by the show’s unexpected success, Hwang replied, “Yeah, in a way, because who can expect this kind of success?” I worked hard to put on a successful show, but I never expected it to be this successful. It’s unexpected.”

The show won three SAG awards earlier this year and has become the most-watched Netflix content ever since its September 17, 2021 debut.
