The 64th Annual Grammy Awards were held in Las Vegas on April 3. The MGM Grand Arena witnessed a star-studded occasion. The Grammy Awards are usually dominated by the Hollywood music industry, but Indian artists and songwriters have made their mark and won a few awards. Let’s take a look at five Indian musicians who have won these awards

Ravi Shankar

Pandit Ravi Shankar was the first Indian to receive a Grammy Award for the album “West Meets East” in the category of “Best Chamber Music Performance” in 1968. In 1973 and 2002, he won awards for his music in the films, “The Concert for Bangladesh” and “Full Circle: Carnegie Hall 2000.” In 2013, Ravi was given a Lifetime Achievement Award for his outstanding contribution to classical music.

Sonu Nigam:

Sonu Nigam, one of India’s most influential and popular playback singers, received a Grammy Award in 2017 for his performance in the film “Mubarakan”.  He is also the most recent winner of the prestigious Golden Gramophone.

Zakir Hussain

Zakir Hussain, who was known for his tabla skills in the post-independence era, was nominated for a Grammy four times. In 2008, he won the award for his “Global Drum Project” in the category of Best Contemporary World Music Album.

AR Rahman

AR Rahman has a unique music style. Two Academy Awards and two Grammy Awards are among his many honours. In 2008, the composer received two Grammys for the Oscar-winning film “Slumdog Millionaire,” in the categories of “Best Compilation Soundtrack Album” and “Best Song Written for Visual Media.”

Zubin Mehta

Zubin Mehta received the award for the “Isaac Stern 60th Anniversary Celebration” in 1981 in the categories of “Best Classical Performance – Instrumental Soloist Or Soloists (With Orchestra)” and “Best Engineered Recording, Classical”. He won the award for “Verdi: Arias (Leontyne Price Sings Verdi)” in the “Best Classical Vocal Soloist Performance” category in 1982. In 1990, Zubin won two more Grammys on the same night, in the categories of “Best Classical Vocal Soloist Performance” and “Best Classical Instrumental Soloist (With Orchestra)”.
