Mount Cook, also known as Aoraki, is the highest mountain in New Zealand. As of 2014, the height of the mountain was listed as 3,724 meters (12,218 feet). The mountain is a part of the mountain range that runs throughout the length of the South Island, better known as the Southern Alps. The mountain is a popular tourist destination and is a favorite amongst mountain climbers. Mount Cook comprises of the three summits namely, the Low Peak (3,593 m), the Middle Peak(3,717m), and the High Peak, mentioned from south to north. Mount Cook also receives a substantial amount of orographic precipitation throughout the course of the year.
The mountain was named Aoraki after it was sited by the Dutch navigator Abel Tasman in 1642. Later on, in 1894, the name was changed to Mount Cook after Capt. James Cook became the first one to climb it in 1894.
