In an effort to bring democracy back to the galaxy, the Alliance to restore the Republic had started a war against the governing Galactic Empire during the Galactic Civil War (4 BBY–5 ABY). This was also known as the revolution or the rebellion. The Galactic Republic and the Jedi Order provided rebel cells with weapons during the Clone Wars so they could battle the Confederacy of Independent Systems, which is when rebellion first began. Numerous rebel groups started battling the Empire after Supreme Chancellor Palpatine, who was actually the Sith Lord Darth Sidious, turned the Republic into the Empire and exterminated the Jedi Order. The Alliance to Restore the Republic was eventually formed when some of these cells banded together.
By the year 4 BBY, the war had already begun, but it was not until Mon Mothma’s Rebel Alliance Declaration in the year 2 BBY that it was formally declared to have started. By taking the blueprints for the Empire’s planet-destroying battle station – the Death Star, during the Battle of Scarif in 0 BBY, the Alliance achieved its first significant victory over the Empire. Princess Leia Organa delivered the blueprints to the Rebel Alliance with the aid of friends including Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and Chewbacca. The Rebels launched the Battle of Yavin after analysing the blueprints, and Skywalker and Solo helped to destroy the Death Star there.
As a result, the Empire hunted the Alliance across the galaxy under the leadership of the Emperor’s right hand, Darth Vader, a Dark Lord of the Sith and the Commander-in-Chief of the Imperial Military. Vader’s forces located the Alliance on the planet, Hoth. As a result, Darth Vader, the Emperor’s right-hand man and the Imperial Military’s Commander-in-Chief, led the Empire in its quest for the Alliance across the galaxy. The Alliance was discovered by Vader’s soldiers on the planet Hoth. The Alliance was forced to leave the snow world and hide its fleet as a result of the Battle of Hoth that followed.

In order to mislead the Alliance into being destroyed, the Emperor set up a trap to reveal the presence of a second Death Star six months later, in the year 4 ABY. The Alliance gathered their whole fleet and made an effort to destroy the Death Star, thinking they were making a surprise strike. The two forces clashed in what would become known as the Battle of Endor as an expansive Imperial fleet waited in the background. Skywalker engaged Vader in a last lightsaber fight on the Death Star after learning that the Dark Lord was his father during the conflict.
The young Jedi was intended to be killed by the Emperor, but out of love for his son, Vader pushed the Sith Lord down a long shaft, where he died, fulfilling his mission as the Chosen One and eliminating the Sith. The Sith’s dominance over the galaxy came to an end when Darth Vader, who was once more Anakin Skywalker, passed away from wounds he received during the fight. The second Death Star was destroyed by the Alliance, shattering the Empire.

Even though the civil war was over, factionalism continued to exist in the former Empire due to the dispersed Imperial remnants that were ruled by different warlords and the Republic’s subsequent declaration that all surviving Imperial officers were war criminals, which eventually led to the start of the Cold War. However, a large number of former Imperial officers, aristocrats, scientists, warlords, and other devoted individuals covertly retreated into the Unknown Regions where they founded the First Order as a part of a covert Contingency created by the late Emperor Palpatine.
