Asha Parekh will receive the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for 2020. Union minister Anurag Thakur made the announcement that the Dadasaheb Phalke award would go to Parekh this time. 

Parekh, born on October 2, 1942, is a former Indian actress, director and producer. She was born in Gujarat and was a part of a number of successful movies. She is 79-years-old and was born to Bachubhai Parekh and Sudha (also known as Salma Parekh). Her mother was a Bohra Muslim while her father was a Hindu Gujarati. She is the only child of her parents.

She is often referred to as the Jubilee girl. 

Parekh claimed that her reputation as being difficult to approach hindered others from approaching with a proposal for marriage. She verified speculations in her autobiography “The Hit Girl” that she had a romantic relationship with the director Nasir Hussain who was married. She said that Hussain had become reclusive after the death of his wife and that she had not seen him for quite a long time.

Parekh was about to get married to an Indian professor living in America but the match ultimately could not go forward. She opened up to Verve Magazine and recalled the experience that in her words ended any inclination to get married. “I did come very close to tying the knot once with a professor from the US. I was visiting him and we were in a cafe at 2 a.m., when he turned to me and nonchalantly said, ‘I have a girlfriend and you’ve come in the way’. It completely caught me off guard. In a way, that was the final straw for me in this whole wedding business.”

In an interview, when asked about her personal life, Asha Parekh said that though she would have loved to get married and have children, it was not meant to be. “However, I have absolutely no regrets,” added the Jubilee girl.
