Dwayne Johnson might return to the squared circle in the upcoming WWE flagship event, WrestleMania 39, in a match against Roman Reigns for the Universal Championship, as per latest rumours circling on social media.

This means that the Brahma Bull can be a surprise entrant to the Royal Rumble match, the winner of which gets to headline to headline WrestleMania and fight for the promotion’s highest honour. It may also be the The Rock’s last hurrah on the celebrated stage after a 9-year hiatus.

“The idea was being talked about backstage, but as best as we can tell, while the rumors certainly exist within the company, as far as who would be in a position to know, there’s no real answer. If Johnson wants to do it and can be sold on the idea, it would be the most perfect scenario for the company,” wrote sports journalist Dave Meltzer on the Wrestling Observer newsletter.

Leati Joseph Anoa’i, popularly known as Roman Reigns is a six-time WWE champion and the defending WWE Universal champion. Both The Rock and Roman Reigns have a similar career trajectory that first followed brief stints in American football before making it big on the professional wrestling arena.

Johnson is widely considered one of the greatest pro-wrestling superstars of all time, and has earlier won the Royal Rumble in 2000. He is also an eight-time winner of the WWE Championship.

Alongside a highly successful sporting career, Johnson has also been a Hollywood superstar, starring in films such as The Mummy Returns (2001), The Scorpion King (2002), The Game Plan (2007), Journey 2: The Mysterious Island (2012), The Hercules (2014) and so on. Though he initially discharged both duties side by side, he has been a full-time actor since his sporting retirement in 2013.
