Bollywood director Nishikant Kamat died on Monday evening at a Hyderabad hospital, news agency ANI reported quoting AIG Hospitals, Hyderabad. He was 50.

“Director Nishikant Kamat passed away at 16.24 hours today. He was suffering from Liver Cirrhosis for the past two years,” AIG Hospitals said in a statement to ANI.

Kamat was known for his work in films like ‘Drishyam’, ‘Madaari’, and ‘Mumbai Meri Jaan’. He had won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Marathi, for the 2007 film ‘Dombivali Fast’. In 2008, he had won Filmfare Critics Award in the Best Film Category for ‘Mumbai Meri Jaan’.

Kamat was earlier put on ventilator support and continued to be in a critical condition, the hospital bulletin said in the morning.

The filmmaker was admitted to the hospital in Hyderabad on July 31, and was being treated for jaundice and abdominal distention, ANI reported.

Last week, the hospital bulletin released a statement saying that he was stable, but in a critical condition.

Actors Riteish Deshmukh and Ajay Devgn condoled the death of the director.

“My equation with Nishikant was not just about Drishyam, a film which he directed with Tabu and me. It was an association that I cherished. He was bright; ever-smiling. He has gone too soon,” Devgn said in a tweet.

“I will miss you my friend. NishikantKamat Rest In Peace,” Riteish Deshmukh tweeted.
