Actor Michael K. Williams, most notably known for his roles in “The Wire,” “Boardwalk Empire,” and “The Night Of,” died at the age of 54, according to US media reports on Monday.

Williams, who was born and reared in Brooklyn, New York, began his career as a performer at the age of 22 when he began dancing professionally. Williams chose to pursue acting professionally after several appearances in music videos and as a background dancer on Madonna and George Michael’s concert tours, according to his official website.

However, since then the body of work of the five-time Emmy nominated actor has grown leaps and bounds. Let’s look at five of the most incredible work that Williams has left behind as a part of his immortal legacy.

5. Gone Baby Gone (2007)

The 2007 thriller is a gripping feature film about two Boston area detectives investigating a little girl’s kidnapping, which ultimately turns into a crisis both professionally and personally. The film stars Morgan Freeman and Casey Affleck.

Williams plays the role of Devin in the Ben Affleck-directed film.

4. 12 Years A Slave (2013)

The three-time Academy Award film narrates the story of a free African-American, Solomon Northup, played by Chiwetel Ejiofor, who is promised a fortnightly job. However, after arriving in Washington DC, he realises that he has been sold into slavery.

In the Steve McQueen directed film, Williams plays the role of Robert.

3. The Night Of (2016)

The 2016 mini-series is one of the finest productions to come out of HBO. The show takes us through the journey of Nasir Khan, played by Riz Ahmed, who gives a lift to a mysterious woman and takes her to a party hosted by his friend. However, he is charged with murder when she is found dead and must prove his innocence.

Michael K. Williams played the role of Freddy Knight, a fellow prisoner to Nasir. His stone-cold demeanour gave a different narrative to the power dynamics in the show.

2. Boardwalk Empire (2010-2014)

Yet again an HBO show on the list, but “Boardwalk Empire” is one of the finest made American shows, which is set chiefly in Atlantic City, New Jersey, during the Prohibition era of the 1920s and stars Steve Buscemi as Nucky Thompson.

With the actors reliving the attitude era, the show has become an iconic period crime drama television series. Williams in the series portrayed the role of Chalky White. Chalky is a racketeer and the unofficial leader of the African-American community in Atlantic City.

1. The Wire (2002-2008)

Coming to the final pick on the list and arguably the finest, “The Wire”, a five-season-long TV series, is one that definitely cannot be missed.

The show set in Baltimore encapsulates the drug scene in the city, as seen through the eyes of drug dealers and law enforcement. Although during its original run, the series received average ratings and never won any major television awards, it is now widely regarded as one of the greatest television shows of all time.

Meanwhile, Williams played  the role of Omar Little in “The Wire.” Omar Little became one of television’s most memorable characters and for his work, Williams was nominated in 2009 for an NAACP Image Award for “Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series.”
