The first Scream trailer is out and it seems a new Ghostface killer is back to haunt Woodsboro. The fifth entry in the slasher franchise is set for a January 14, 2022 release as Neve Campbell (Sidney Prescott), Courteney Cox (Gale Weathers) and David Arquette (Dewey Riley) return to their iconic roles. Melissa Barrera, Kyle Gallner, Mason Gooding, Mikey Madison, Dylan Minnette, Jenna Ortega, Jack Quaid, Marley Shelton, Jasmin Savoy Brown, and Sonia Ammar will take on supporting roles in the 2021 reboot/spin-off.

The film has been directed by the Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, whose last helmed the 2019 horror-comedy Ready or Not together.

According to the film’s official synopsis, Scream takes up events 25 years after a “streak of brutal murders shocked the quiet town of Woodsboro.” A new killer has donned the Ghostface mask to target a group of teenagers “to resurrect secrets from the town’s deadly past. ”

The trailer shows Dewey call Sidney to bring her back to Woodsboro to team up Gale to stop the killer. “Hello Sidney, it’s an honour,” Sidney is told as she comes face-to-face with the killer at the end of the trailer.

Paramount had confirmed the trailer’s release date following its debut at 25th anniversary screenings of the first movie. The makers also dropped a new poster to mark the trailer’s release with an intriguing tagline that read “it’s always someone you know.”

Scream is the first outing in the franchise since creator Wes Craven’s death in 2015. Courteney Cox said Scream isn’t exactly a direct sequel to Scream 4 even though it does follow the events of the 2011 movie.

“These directors, I mean God, the directors [Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett] are just incredible,” she said on The Drew Barrymore Show. “It’s hip, it’s scary, it’s just a new Scream. It’s not a reboot, it’s not a remake, it’s just a brand new launch. I think it’s gonna be fantastic.”
