Golden Globe host Jerrod Carmichael joked about Tom Cruise and Scientology before calling on Glen Powell and Jay Ellis, Cruise’s “Top Gun: Maverick” co-stars.

Carmichael was introducing presenters when he mocked Cruise’s decision in 2021 to return his three Golden Globe awards in protest of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association over its diversity scandal.

On Tuesday, Carmichael came out on stage holding three Golden Globes in his hand, telling the audience, “Backstage, I found these three Golden Globe awards that Tom Cruise returned. I’m just a host briefly, or whatever, but I have a pitch I think maybe we take these three things and exchange them for the safe return of Shelly Miscavige.”

Carmichael also took a dig at Scientology by referencing Shelly Miscavige, the wife of Scientology leader David Miscavige. Cruise is a member of the religion.

For many years, Shelly has been away from the public eye and her whereabouts have been a question for many on social media.

In 2021, Cruise had announced he was returning his three Golden Globes. At the time, NBC had just canceled the Golden Globes broadcast. However, the network started the broadcast after HFPA made necessary changes.

However, this year, Cruise has not received a nomination in the category of best performance by an actor in a motion picture-drama. But, his film was nominated for Best Motion Picture — Drama and Best Original Song – Motion Picture.
