At the opening of his headline act at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival on Friday, April 15, Harry Styles stood at the top of the stage, wrapped up in a fluffy black coat.

Styles surprised the crowd with country-pop icon Shania Twain, who sang two of her biggest hits, dropped a couple of brand-new songs, and captivated the crowds who stayed until nearly 1 a.m. Saturday on Day 1 of the first Coachella in three years.

Away from the event grounds, Friday saw Arcade Fire perform a surprise show in the Mojave Tent, Brazilian pop diva Anitta offered a breakout set on the Main Stage with guests including Snoop Dogg and Saweetie, and indie singer-songwriter Phoebe Bridgers perform a stunning set of her melancholy music on the Main Stage.

Styles dashed down the curved white staircase that surrounded his band after his entrance, kicking off the show with the live release of his recent single, “As It Was.”

Styles glowed like a human disco ball as he danced about the stage in a one-piece jumpsuit covered in big spherical sequins.

After a set of more famous songs including “Adore You,” “Golden,” and “Carolina,” the revelation of “Boyfriend,” the first new song, brought a round of applause from the audience, He told them, “You haven’t heard it yet, so you don’t know if you like it!”

Twain appeared at the top of the stage and performed  “I Feel Like a Woman!”

“In the car, with my mother as a child, this woman taught me to sing, “Styles said almost reverently after the song.

Following that was “You’re Still The One,” one of Twain’s most popular tunes. At the show’s conclusion, Sir Harry kissed Twain’s hand and waved her off, making her the only performer to have headlined, or at least contributed to, both Coachella and Stagecoach.

Then came “Late Night Talking,”. Styles’ night ended with “Watermelon Sugar,” “Kiwi,” and “Sign Of The Times,” all of which are among his biggest hits.
