Actor and director Dushyant Kapoor’s obsession with superhero projects started when he was in school. “When I was in 10th grade I told a classmate that I was a superhero, he then became very interested in me. I told him that I had wings and that I needed to go save the world after school. The next day, the entire school knew about this, including the principal,” he told Opoyi.

Kapoor says that soon after that, his principal chastised him for spreading a false rumour.

“…but it hit me hard that my single story had reached the entire school because it was something that no one would believe. That day, I made a few new friends. That’s when my super-hero obsession took off, and I dreamed of becoming a filmmaker someday to make superhero movies,” said Kapoor, who is known for creating back to back series on Indian Superheroes.

Till date he has created 3 superhero series titled ‘Mahakal’, ‘Boom -The magic pencil’ and ‘Suitboy’. His most recent work includes ‘The Celestials’ which includes superheroes from all the previous universe.

Kapoor says that ‘Man of Steel’ is a film that he enjoys watching.

“This was the film that inspired me to do something in life because I created the character mahakaal and discovered that man of steel has a lot in common with him. I was in school when I saw this film, and after that, I went to film school and created my superhero web show Mahakaal. After that, I never missed a superhero film by Zack Snyder, the creator of Man of Steel,” he said.

The actor-director says that most Hollywood superhero films, such as “Avengers,” “Superman,” “Spiderman,” and “Iron Man,” make the majority of their money in India because Indians enjoy watching superhero movies.

And this is the reason why he wants more Indian filmmakers to come up with superhero films.

“It’s just that there aren’t many filmmakers in India who are passionate about making Superhero films. I just want other filmmakers to understand that making superhero films takes a lot of time and effort, but people will always support you if you put your heart and soul into it.

“Because the audience has become extremely intelligent, they have witnessed Superman flying over the city and Spiderman swinging here and there. To be successful, our content must be unique and original,” he said.

What about the commercial viability of such projects in India?

“Since most Bollywood superhero films are based on Hollywood notions, this could be true at times. However, the majority of superhero movies in Hollywood are based on Indian history. So, in my opinion, we need to make a decision to make a decent superhero film, and I am confident that people will back us up.

“Making three superhero web series was really difficult for me due to a lack of funding. However, the audience’s passion and response to the shows later filled it,” he says.

Kapoor hopes “to open my universe in theatres soon, and I can’t wait for people to see my films in theatres and hear their thoughts.”
