Irene Cara, the Flashdance and Fame star, died as a result of hypertension and high cholesterol. The 63-year-old’s medical documents from the medical examiner in Florida’s Pinellas County showed the cause of death is Arteriosclerotic and Hypertensive Cardiovascular Disease, according to TMZ. The report also states Cara was diabetic.
Cara was best known for her iconic song What a Feeling from the ’80s flick Flashdance. She also won an Oscar for Best Original thanks to the hit. She received a lot of recognition for her song Fame from the movie of the same name. She received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress for her role in the film.

Family

Cara’s father Gasper Cara was a steel factory worker and retired saxophonist. Her mother Louise Escalera was a movie theater usher. Cara has two sisters and two brothers, She was the youngest of five children.
She married stuntman and film director Conrad Palmisano in Los Angeles on April 13, 1986. The couple divorced in 1991.

Career
At the age of five, Irene Cara started to play the piano by ear and studied music, acting, and dance. Her performing career started with her singing and dancing professionally on Spanish-language television. After recording both Spanish and English music as a child, she went on to be featured in several on-and-off Broadway musicals. In 1980, she bagged the role of Cono Hernandez in the groundbreaking musical about teenagers living their best artistic lives at the High School of Performing Arts in New York City.

She received a Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance and an Academy Award for Best Original Song.
