G Herbo faces up to 20 years behind bars after pleading guilty to fraud for allegedly using stolen identities to fund private jets, a Jamaican villa, “designer puppies,” and then lying about it to federal agents.

Charges

Chicago rapper G Herbo, accused of using stolen identities to pay for private jets, a Jamaican house, and “designer puppies,” and then lying to federal agents, agreed to enter a guilty plea in Massachusetts to federal wire fraud charges. He now faces years in prison.

On Wednesday, the same day Herbo, whose actual name is Herbert Wright III, was summoned to court in Springfield, Massachusetts as a result of his recent arrest on a weapons charge in Chicago, the prosecution filed a plea agreement outlining the conditions of the bargain in that court.

More than two and a half years after the Tribune first reported that Wright had been charged with conspiring to commit wire fraud and aggravated identity theft, the judge must still approve the potential plea. In a separate indictment from 2021, the accusation of lying to agents was included.

Wright would probably receive a sentence in the two- to three-year range under federal sentencing guidelines even though the wire fraud offence carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison. That information is still being figured out.

A preliminary date for a plea hearing before U.S. District Judge Mark G. Mastroianni was set for July 27.

Wright, 27, who is from the South Side neighbourhood some have dubbed “Terror Town,” was charged with using stolen identities to make up to $1.5 million in fraudulent charges for goods and services, including private jet trips, a personal chef, a vacation at a Jamaican villa, and the puppies from a Michigan company, along with five associates, including promoter Antonio Strong.

When he was initially charged, Wright fiercely denied all wrongdoing. In fact, in late 2020, he released a new song and music video mocking the government investigation and celebrating his ascent from the seedy South Side streets to international fame.

According to the accusations, Wright misled a federal investigator about his friendship with Strong, a Chicago rap promoter who was allegedly the scheme’s mastermind, in November 2018.

A day after being taken into police custody, Wright was charged with misdemeanor and unauthorized use of a weapon and released on bond, according to court documents.

After appearing before a federal magistrate in Massachusetts on Wednesday, Wright was given permission to continue being free on bond in his federal case, according to court documents.
