Answer: 3

Pope Francis has inducted three women to a previously all-male committee that advises him in selecting the world’s bishops. In an exclusive interview with Reuters earlier this month, he has disclosed about this decision and explained that he wanted to give women more top-level positions in the Holy See.

The three women are sister Raffaella Petrini, currently the deputy governor of the Vatican City, French nun Yvonne Reungoat and laywoman Maria Lia Zervino, head of the association of women’s catholic organisations UMOFC.

Pope Francis is the head of the Catholic Church in Vatican City since 2013. He was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, to two Italian immigrants, on December 17, 1936. He holds advanced degrees in chemistry, philosophy, and theology.

Before beginning his religious studies,  he worked as a janitor, a bar bouncer, and a lab assistant for a chemist. After several years of study, he entered the Society of Jesus in 1958. After finishing his initial training, Pope Francis took vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience, and became a Jesuit on March 12, 1960. He was ordained to the priesthood almost a decade later, in December 1969.

The pope is considered one of the world’s most powerful people due to the extensive diplomatic, cultural, and spiritual influence of his position on both 1.3 billion Catholics and those outside the Catholic faith. He heads the world’s largest non-government provider of education, health care and many other things.
